Why marketplace prices can be higher
Vrbo and Airbnb make it easy to discover homes, compare reviews and arrange a stay. But their booking services come at a cost, separate from the cost of providing the vacation home. That cost can reach you in two ways: a traveler service fee added to your stay, or a higher rental rate that helps the owner cover a commission deducted from their payout.
A fee charged to the owner does not disappear simply because you don’t see it at checkout. When an owner raises the marketplace rate to recover that commission, the platform’s cost is built into the rent. For the same home and inclusions, that higher price does not buy extra nights, an upgraded house or better amenities.
Vrbo can charge both the owner and the traveler; its traveler fee varies by reservation and cannot be waived by the host. Airbnb’s single-fee model generally deducts 15.5% from the host’s payout rather than charging a separate guest service fee. A checkout with no separate service-fee line can therefore still include marketplace costs.
Some owners absorb those charges, and promotions can affect the comparison. Compare final quotes for the same dates, guests, inclusions and cancellation terms. The example below shows how savings can arise when marketplace commissions are reflected in the price.

Example methodology: Both marketplace prices assume the owner raises the rate to cover the platform’s commission and retain $7,450 before other operating and payment-processing costs. Vrbo includes a 12% owner commission and an illustrative 8% traveler fee, bringing the total to $9,143.18. Airbnb includes a 15.5% owner commission, bringing the total to $8,816.57, with no separate guest service fee. Vrbo’s traveler fee varies; 8% is an assumption.

Is the extra cost of booking through Vrbo or Airbnb buying the protection you actually need?
